Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
Incorporated in 1988, the American Syringomyelia Alliance Project, Inc (ASAP) began doing business as American Syringomyelia & Chiari Alliance Project in 2009 in order for our name to more fully reflect our focus. Our mission is to improve the lives of persons affected by syringomyelia, Chiari malformation and related disorders while we find the cure. These disorder affect over 200,000 children and adults (in the United States) yet is virtually unknown by the majority of health care providers. The first ASAP newsletter was a three-page typed letter sent to about 100 persons in 1988. In 2007 we received Adobe InDesign CS3 through the Adobe and Tech Soup partnership. The program allows us to produce a profession publication that provides information and support to thousands of individuals. Adobe Photoshop gives our newsletter added quality and depth.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
ASAP Connections is published bi-monthly to keep our member up-to-date about support, research and awareness programs. It is a lifeline for thousands of individuals who at one time felt alone and misunderstood. Over the years we have direct mailed thousands of copies of each issue. Our Going Green campaign was initiated last year to introduce E-Connections. The digital version gives people the opportunity to read each issue online or download to their home computer. Archive issues are available on our website at http://www.asap.org/index.php/resources/newsletter/ for a period of three years. We will continue to mail issues to member who prefer to receive their newsletter in that manner.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
When diagnosed with a relatively unknown disorder, information is crucial. Adobe has made it possible for ASAP to not only share information it has allowed us to do it effectively and professionally. Thank you Adobe and TechSoup for making this possible.
