Impact Essay

WEST has found Microsoft Power Point to be an effective tool in recruiting for our 2009 Pacific Swimming Diversity Grant and Expanding our Mission Statement. “To offer the highest quality aquatic programs to the community and to provide the opportunity for an individual to become an elite-level athlete in a safe and enjoyable environment.” West Coast Aquatic has been awarded a Pacific Swimming Diversity Grant for to provide 50 middle school students with not just swim lessons; but a comprehensive swim experience.  Participants will receive :        *  6 weeks of small group swim instruction and water safety lessons;        *  Coached by USA Swimming coaches and seasoned high school swimmers;        *  Swimmers with 75% attendance will be able to pass High School Swimming Test;        *  TEAM Swimsuit, goggles and swim cap (values at $50);
       *  Summer swim team T-shirt and WEST team sweats (values at $50)        *  USA Swimming registration fee and swim meet entry fees All valued at nearly $375. Our participants are being asked for a co-pay of $100. The primary purpose of the Pacific Swimming Diversity & Outreach Program is to increase multicultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity and to foster an inclusive environment at all levels of the sport of competitive swimming. It is intended that this program will reach out to underrepresented groups in the overall community.

 Diversity out reach will strength and extend the WEST Mission Statement in 3 ways:
1. Broaden the scope of USA Swimming creating more high level athletes and creating a higher quality National  USA Swim Team;
2. Save lives: Drowning is a preventable cause of the death of children and 50% over drowning victims are African-American or Hispanic children. Many of these families do not have the resources available to teach their kids how to swim. This program will provide low cost quality learn to swim programs;
3. stress a healthy lifestyle, free of drugs, smoking and violence. These programs give the participants the sense of being "part of something larger than themselves

 West Coast Aquatics is using Microsoft Power Point to announce, present, and recruit middle school students for our Pacific Swimming Diversity Grant. Through our  Power  Point presentation we are able to use words and images to convey to parents what an incredible opportunity our program is for  their children.

In addition using the Power Point Program as a tool has allowed us to: * easily edit and customize  the present to the group we are addressing; * train multiple individuals as presenters and  download the program to multiple computers so that the presentation can be made  in multiple venues simultaneously allowing use greater access to the community.  * use memorable images * accent powerful  personal stories All of these components have made the West Coast Aquatics Diversity Grant power point presentations very successful in recruiting for the program and Expanding our Mission Statement. “To offer the highest quality aquatic programs to the community and to provide the opportunity for an individual to become an elite-level athlete in a safe and enjoyable environment.”
