Impact Essay

For over twenty-five years, VSA Arts of Indiana has led the movement to make the arts accessible to people with disabilities. VSA arts is an international educational program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. It was founded as Very Special Arts in 1974 by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith, sister of John F. Kennedy. The letters “VSA” now stand for Vision of an inclusive Community, Strength of shared resources, and Access to artistic expression that unites all of us.

Columbus hosts the VSAI Arts Festival annually. This year, we produced another VSAI Arts Festival in Sunman, Indiana, which is approximately 55 miles from Columbus. These festivals allow children with moderate to severe identified disabilities the opportunity to take field trips and participate in a variety of arts activities. The festival offers comprehensive programs in dance, music, drama, creative writing and visual arts. For many of these children, this is the only exposure they will have to the arts.

In an effort to increase the impact of our services and to reach larger audiences, we plan to continue offering two VSAI Arts Festivals—one in Columbus and one in another city in our region. Since two festivals increases the budget needed to continue with quality programs, we will use the brochure to increase our fundraising dollars.
