Impact Essay

Wediko has over 75 years of experience working with children and adolescents whose learning, social development, and self-direction are lagging. Yet, even with its years of history, Wediko faced major challenges when trying to renovate an IT infrastructure last updated in the early 2000s.

To address this challenge, Wediko challenged its managed services provider, Tech Networks of Boston (TNB), to create a secure server environment while also limiting cost. TNB deployed a Terminal Services enivronment, using:

  • HP ProLiant ML350
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
  • Windows Terminal Services
  • HP ProCurve 8-Port Managed Switch
  • Veritas Backup Exec Remote

This project allowed for Wediko to extend the life of their current workstations by converting slower computers to terminals. When new staff came on-board, Wediko only needed to buy a thin client device, saving hundreds versus a whole workstation.

By implementing Terminal Services, Wediko employees were able to access critical business applications, such as email and student database, from any location. The remote access devices installed allowed staff from the summer New Hampshire office communicate and collaborate directly with the Boston-based teams.

In turn, Wediko was able to divert funds from its IT budget to extending the mission of its summer program in New Hampshire and its school-based program in Boston. This includes:

  • The Wediko School: Creating a supportive school and social environment with ample opportunities for learning and for competency gains are key goals of Wediko’s residential treatment program. Our intensive residential program for boys ages 11 to 18 (licensed 6 to 21) utilizes multidisciplinary teams, individualized education plans, and a strength-based, family centered approach to foster success.

  • The Wediko Summer Program: Located on a 450-acre, wooded, waterfront campus, the Summer Program provides opportunity for children to experience social, emotional, and academic success.

  • The Wediko School-based Program: We partner directly with teachers and schools, both in Boston and in the surrounding communities, to offer customized solutions to learning and behavioral problems.
