Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
This four-color 12”x18” poster was created with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to promote Pied Piper Players’ musical production, The Wiz. It was posted in retail stores, schools, churches, dance studios, etc. to generate interest in the show, reflect the style of the production and to promote ticket sales. Further, it was intended to support the company image as professional, high quality and award winning. It is innovative in the atypical use of typography and imagery. The unique design was intended to initially grab the viewer’s attention, draw them in, and entice them to look at the detailed performance information.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
There are a great many entertainment opportunities of this nature in our area. There are numerous schools, professional and community theaters, as well as touring artistic companies competing for audiences. We needed to break through the clutter and visually differentiate Pied Piper Players from the crowd and get the public to want to come to this mainstage production of The Wiz. Mainstage production ticket sales help support our goal to bring affordable, enriching theater to children and families who may not otherwise be able to experience the theater arts. A successful show reflects positively on our company and financially supports our outreach programs like ticket-giving and after-school theater arts programs.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
This poster stood out. Many commented on the unique execution, noting it was “cool” and really different from the typical show poster. The type treatments and colors were visually captivating and conveyed a sense of excellence supporting Pied Piper Players’ goal to be perceived as a professional organization offering high-quality theater productions and programs. Our mainstage productions speak for themselves, but the visual communication promoting them must help fill the seats and help set expectations that the theatergoers will see a great performance. This poster met both those objectives.
