- Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
- "What to Wear to the Theater" was a video piece that we created to open up the invitation to everyone to enjoy theater--no matter what you were wearing. We didn't want people to be intimidated by dress and to feel as though they could come to the theater at any time. One of the ways it is an innovative piece is that the whole piece was shot as stills using our digital slr and then assembled in After Effects, outputted and edited in Final Cut Pro then brought back into After Effects to add the graphics. It was also innovative in that many theaters do not necessarily promote dressing down to go to theatrical production.
- What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
- Portland Center Stage wanted to reach out to younger audience members and include them into the fold of all the patrons that we have. It was also meant to reach the potential patron that may avoid going to the theater thinking it may be too stuffy or that they didn't have what they thought would be "proper" attire.
- How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
- We got a really positive response to the video. It has broken down some of the barriers to some who would otherwise not come to the theater as well as having a community building effect. Several other theaters responded asking to use it because they felt they had similar issues.
