Updating Valley Village's Spirit

Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
This is a three-panel brochure designed to capture the spirit of Valley Village - the men and women with developmental disabilities that we serve through family-style homes and day programs. The brochure we had previously was dim and unfriendly - photos were posed and very small. The emphasis was truly on having a piece of collateral rather than having a stimulating conversation piece that tells the story of what Valley Village is and who we are. The new brochure is innovative because it goes beyond a piece of collateral. It truly is a description of why Valley Village is important to people with Down syndrome, autism and other developmental disabilities.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
The previous piece was dark and complicated. We were working to brighten the piece through the use of candid photographs and broader use of color. We were also working to clean up the design and make the piece more accessible.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
Yes. Feedback from contributors and community members has been extremely positive. The brochures are being read now, rather than being tossed. People are generally interested in the subject matter and the design allows that to happen.
