Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
Santa Cecilia Orchestra was created to take music to Latino communities that are underserved and underrepresented by the arts. We developed a program for making music more accessible to everyone in Los Angeles by offering free or affordable concerts of high quality, and providing a music education program for schools. Our program reaches over 20,000 students and their families a year in communities that are severely economically disadvantaged with a significant gang presence. By teaching school children that the arts are fulfilling and accessible, Santa Cecilia Orchestra is helping build a different path for their lives. Our submission is a season brochure we created. The brochure lists our concerts for the year and educational program. Our brochure was created in-house by our associate director. Adobe’s donation made it possible to create an orchestra brochure and top quality promotional materials. We used Photoshop CS4, InDesign CS4 and Illustrator CS4 to create this Brochure.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
We seek to provide children in disadvantaged neighborhoods with a vision and an opportunity that offers an alternative to the limited choices that poverty and gang violence often force upon them. Music has been identified as a powerful and noninvasive medium for reaching youth and changing lives. Santa Cecilia Orchestra is delivering that medium to some of the most impoverished and violent neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Santa Cecilia Orchestra is making a significant cultural impact on Los Angeles, and especially on the Latino communities in the city. In spite of this, the orchestra lacked the proper promotional materials to properly promote itself and to attract new audiences and donors. It was critical to our growth to have the proper materials. We needed to strengthen our institutional identity since we create great art and needed to project the quality of our art in a visual way to potential audience.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
Adobe’s donation allowed us to acquire powerful programs that we would otherwise not have been able to afford. The facility of use allowed our very own staff to learn to use all the programs and to integrate them to create first class materials for the orchestra. The submission is our fourth brochure created. We are proud to share our successes with you. Our materials created with Adobe software have brought us much attention, many new audiences and donors. Our budget has tripled in the last 3 years since creating our very first brochure. We have garnered increased media attention, new audiences and sponsorship from foundations. This season culminated in a sold out audience for our concert celebrating Mexico’s Bicentennial. Adobe’s donation has helped Santa Cecilia Orchestra offer hope, vision and possibility to some of the most underserved children in our city. Thank you for your consideration of our submission.
