Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
Reality Changers (RC) printed 20,000 copies of its 10 Year Report to promote RC’s successes on its anniversary. It is distributed to donors, media, & potential supporters. RC wanted a professional compilation of the program’s successes. CS4 allowed RC to produce a high-quality report that draws attention to RC’s measurable results. Individuals comment on the improvement of RC’s marketing materials & how the report is an upgrade from previous years. RC wanted to highlight the program’s achievements while also drawing attention to negative statistics that the program seeks to overcome. The report is innovative because it highlights a comparison of WHY RC is a uniquely successful model for building first generation inner-city college students. This is clearly stated on the “Reality/Reality Changed” section of the report. This section is constantly being highlighted, including a recent mention on ABC News 10 San Diego. This is the kind of attention that RC seeks to gain from the report.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
Through the 10 Year Report, RC seeks to address the issue that it’s just not fair that inner-city youth know more people that have been shot and killed on the streets than those that are on the road to college. RC seeks to bring about awareness of the fact that many of our underserved youth are slipping through the cracks of society by being convicted to the juvenile detention system, becoming pregnant, or by merely not having adequate support at home or school. Simultaneously, RC also wants to highlight why a program such as Reality Changers is so important, why it is truly life-changing, and why it is necessary to improving the quality of life and education among the youth in America’s most underserved communities.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
The report has helped RC’s ability to address this issue by bringing new donors and supporters to the organization. For example, RC was selected as one of two recipients (out of 41 applicants) for a $75,000 grant by San Diego Social Venture Partners. Someone on the selection committee stated that the report stood out more than any other materials submitted by other organizations – so much so that she immediately read it cover to cover. This reaction is normal for people who read the report. Additionally, the statistics in the report stood out so much that ABC News San Diego highlighted some of the statistics in a recent news report. This kind of positive effect is what will help continue to draw attention to RC, which will in turn continue helping RC solve the issues inner-city youth face by providing sufficient funds to remove the students that are on the waiting list, expand to more locations, and become a national model.
