- Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
- Artwork has transformed our old van into an eye-catching bookmobile. It is now a mobile signboard the children at Title I schools will recognize.
We used Adobe Illustrator for the bookmobile project. The artwork, taken from our web page, needed to be vectorized for the sign company’s use. Lettersmith & Company then wrapped the van, transforming it into a bookmobile.
- What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
- Goal: To support summer reading and literacy by reaching children who may not be able to use the library any other way. Students at Title I schools far from the library need access to books.
Since we couldn’t get funding to bring the children to the library, we decided to take the library to them. Although there is no funding for a bookmobile either, the community is coming together to make this work. The Olathe Public Library is converting its old van to a bookmobile for the summer. We will be visiting four of our Title I schools during June and July. We will check out paperbacks so we don’t have to collect parent signatures.
We wanted something bright and as recognizable as an ice cream truck. Community leaders got on the bookmobile (plan) with us. The wrap for the van, donated paperbacks and cash donations from individuals and organizations like Rotary are making this work. We used the Scholastic Warehouse Sale to purchase Spanish language paperbacks very inexpensively.
- How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
- This artwork/bookmobile is now visiting the schools for "show and tell" so the children will know that they will find books and reading available this summer within walking distance. Children in 4 neighborhoods will have reading materials available this summer and beyond. This "bright" idea has stimulated local people to help provide materials and volunteer to help.
