Building with Passion - Habitat for Humanity of Orange County's new website

Organization Name:
Habitat for Humanity of Orange County
City & State:
Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
We completely redesigned our website, and wanted to showcase the passion our community has for the Habitat mission of creating simple decent housing for hardworking families in need. We selected Adobe Flash, hoping to create a vibrant slideshow on our mainpage: www.habitatoc.org Each slide depicts the call-to-action for our volunteers, families and donors: get involved, apply for a home, view our homes in progress, please donate, etc. We have used Adobe Photoshop to create/modify all our images, photos, graphics, buttons, banners on our website. Please view the following page for a sample of a landing page banner: www.habitatoc.org/Page.aspx?pid=282
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
Our old website was very dated and text oriented. (see http://mason.habitatoc.org/). Our goal was to create a site that created a sense of community and encourage our families, volunteers and donors to get involved. Our design goal was "to create an arresting, story-telling site with images..an impossible-to-leave-the-site-without-getting-involved-experience".
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
Response to the website has been very positive in creating a sense of community and involvement with Habitat OC. The vibrancy of the site plays a large part in the increased traffic and involvement. Our website redesign was recently submitted to the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals’ (AMCP) Hermes Creative Awards 2010 competition. Our site is an award winner, earning the gold award under the design/web site home page category.
