Impact Essay
Milwaukee Christian Center Goes Green A group of children and volunteers at the Milwaukee Christian Center felt it was time to educate their community on the importance of taking care of the earth and their community by reducing, reusing, and recycling. The following is just some of the mini projects we created. On April 9, 2009 MCC held a neighborhood cleanup. The kids, staff, and volunteers helped with the cleanup. We began by passing out flyers inviting the community to join the cleanup. We really wanted to teach the kids to take pride in their community by keeping it clean. In addition to the cleanup we also passed out brochures about the methods of reducing, reusing, and recycling. The brochures explained how using the three R’s helps the environment and stops the consumption of more natural resources. In addition, the brochure talked about how consuming fewer products uses less energy, creating less pollution. The brochure also talked about the rewards of practicing the three R’s, such as earning money when you turn in your cans. After the cleanup, everyone was rewarded with a pizza party, followed by a discussion about methods they and their families can use to decrease the negative impact they may be having on the environment by not practicing the three R’s. We discussed the steps they can take towards “Going Green”. We are very pleased to mention that MCC has now increased our recycling efforts by buying more recycling bins, putting up signs, and working with the city to get more recycling dumpsters on our parking lot. All these efforts are to pass on the message that we could live without pollution if we all do our part. Overall we had lots of fun doing this project and we hope we made an impact.
